about us

WHO WE ARE

Annapolis Tango welcomes all those interested in learning and dancing Argentine Tango as danced in the traditional milongas of Buenos Aires. We are a very active and growing community offering regular classes, practicas, and milongas (social dances).

In a very short time, we have built a strong, welcoming and friendly tango family here in the heart of Annapolis. Through the passion and support of our members, we have hosted many of the best teachers from around the world. As of June of 2016, we have been thrilled to have one of the most cherished teachers and tango DJs in the States, J. Abling, along with his partner, Rachel Moon, as our Resident Teachers.

Please Join our Mailing list below and follow us on our Annapolis Tango Facebook page for ongoing updates!

OUR MISSION & VISION

We envision a community of people, intertwined through their love of tango. Our goal is to create and nurture good, respectful social dancers who care for the growth of their own dance as much as the growth of others. With this goal in mind, our dream is to see Annapolis as a destination city for tango dancers all over the world.

J. Abling

Resident Teacher, Co-owner

A dancer/performer since the age of 10, J. Abling fell in love with Argentine tango in 1999 and immediately committed to it exclusively. Since, he has dedicated himself to continuously refining his dance as well as his teaching method, actively learning from some of the most renowned teachers in tango, including Jaimes Friedgen, Luciana Valle, Graciela Gonzales, Sebastian Arce & Mariana Montes, Carlitos Espinoza & Noelia Hurtado, Chicho Frumboli & Juana Sepulveda, and Tete Rusconi. Through these influences, he melds elements from various tango styles into a dance that is both natural and expressive.

J.’s highly energetic classes and workshops blend hands-on practical technique, musical morsels, and flavorful figures with a touch of quirky humor. He approaches both tango and teaching with critical analysis in an organic and fluid fashion that engages, challenges, and enlightens participants of all levels. Many of his students have commented on J.’s ability to help them reach important and lasting breakthroughs in their dance. He has taught at major festivals and cities in the country including San Diego, San Francisco, Albuquerque, Tucson, Ann Arbor, Maui, Portland, Denver, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York City. J, along with his partner, has recently finished teaching in several countries on Europe.

Beyond his teaching, J. is also a nationally sought-after DJ, who is known to keep a good party going with an astute awareness of a dance floor’s changing energies and hand-picked choices of music to inspire dancers all night long. He is a regular DJ at major tango festivals and has DJed at local milongas all over the country, including Portland, Seattle, Maui, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Denver, Austin, Houston, Washington, DC, and New York City.

Rachel Moon

Resident Teacher, Co-owner

Rachel Moon has been an avid social dancer for over 20 years. After many years of swing and salsa, she finally found tango in 2009. For the first several years of dancing tango, she took few classes and instead honed her instincts on the dance floor. In 2015, Rachel spent 6 months training and immersing herself in tango culture in Buenos Aires, where she learned from many world-class instructors.

Soon after Rachel's return to the U.S., she began teaching with J. Abling and helping to build the Annapolis Tango community. Working with J. and learning to teach deepened her understanding of tango technique and musicality enormously. As a teacher, Rachel strives to tap into each student’s instinctual body movement and help them acquire tango technique that feels good and is functional on the dance floor. She also injects a healthy dose of fun and humor into her teaching. Aside from the Annapolis/D.C. area, Rachel has been honored to teach with J. in festivals and workshops around the world, including Sweden, Switzerland, Lithuania, California, New Mexico, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, & Delaware.

In 2017, Rachel took up the art of DJing tango, and quickly became a sought-after DJ in the D.C. area. She has also DJ'd at many milongas and events around the country, including Albuquerque Tango Festival & Ashland Connect.

Julie McCormick

Founder

Julie is the founder of Annapolis Tango. She danced professionally with Hubbard Street Dance Company, FELD Ballets/NY and Twyla Tharp Dance Company. She is an ABT® (American Ballet Theater) Certified Teacher and has been on the faculty of The Washington Ballet School, Ballet Royale (Columbia), Design in Motion (Gambrills), The Studio Cooperative (Waldorf) and Towson University Community Dance Program. She was recently teaching pre-professional ballet and repertoire at Conservatoire XIV (Elliott City) until Tango overtook her life!

Julie studied tango briefly in NYC after retiring from the stage. However, a more recent trip to Buenos Aires resulted in a long-anticipated immersion into the dance. (Read her blog post 'Surrendering to Strangers' about her experience). After sailing with her husband from 2012 - 2014, they returned to Annapolis where her excitement for the dance and desire to introduce it to others manifested in the creation of 'Annapolis Tango'. Within 6 months, she was stunned to find among her a wonderful group of new friends - an entirely new tango community!

Between February and September of 2016, Julie brought to Annapolis some of the most renowned Argentine tango teachers such as Monica Paz, Juan Cantone & Sol Orozco, Rebecca Shulman, Brigitta Winkler, Susana Miller and, finally, J. Abling, before convincing J. and Rachel to stay in Annapolis. Julie is a consummate student of tango (a life-long endeavor) and counts J. Abling as one of her most influential teachers thus far. She hopes to continue to inspire those in and around Annapolis to learn this beautiful dance in between her sailing excursions with her Captain and husband, Glenn McCormick, aboard the good Schooner Mistress.

Special Mentions

People who helped us along the way

There are many people in the community to whom we owe a special thank you. First off, we would like to acknowledge those that helped in the first months of our existence.  Andrea Moragues, a local dancer and teacher, first helped get classes started in the area and her support in the beginning was invaluable.  Ronn Nuger, a long-time local, has co-taught beginner classes, and is always volunteering his time and energy to the group. He has also been a wonderful sounding board, particularly in the first months of our existence. There are also individuals, teachers and mentors outside Annapolis Tango whose support, advice and encouragement have been indispensable, in particular - Tuan Tran, Rebecca Shulman, Barbara Durr & Eugenia Park, Mitra Martin, Sharna Fabiano, and Brigitta Winkler.

Many thanks to Debbie and Nabil Badro, who have been incredibly generous in offering their space, Severna Park Racquetball Club, for our weekly practica and for sending many students our way. Heartfelt thanks to Paul Malley, who has allowed us to use his yoga dojo as a tango dojo, and has been a loyal friend to Annapolis Tango. Thank you to Sheila White Guevin for being part of the community through her wonderful photography, as well as Eddie Arrossi, a local dancer/photographer, with whom we've also collaborated on his project, City Dock Tango.

Also a special thanks to our guest DJs: Diane Yates, Nathan Kottke, & Audrey Goldberg, as well as our substitute teaching team: Ronn Nuger, Christina Pax, David Solomon, Richard Spikes, Nathan Kottke, Jessica Hilbert, Debbie Badro, and Joerg & Sarah Schlatterer. We're also very grateful to the countless members who have volunteered to help over the years, in various capacities. There are too many to name them all, but we'd like to acknowledge Deb Boudra and Ron Thomson, for their weekly help at the practica, their friendship, & their enthusiastic dedication to Annapolis Tango.

Last, but most importantly, thank you to those who are official members of the community - you know who you are! Your involvement and support are the single most sustaining factor of Annapolis Tango. THANK YOU.
