Argentine tango is a social dance, born out of the immigrant neighborhoods of Buenos Aires in the early 1900s. Over the past century, its popularity spread beyond the Argentine dance halls and into the hearts of people from all nations and ethnicities. To this day, Argentine tango is enjoyed, practiced and embodied in nearly every major city worldwide. The tango we speak of is often mistaken for ballroom tango (international or american) or what is seen on "Dancing with the Stars". Authentic argentine tango is shared between two people, not to an audience. It's a dance that is as simple and complex as any language; an improvisational conversation with the goal of communicating ideas and expressing togetherness with each movement. The Annapolis Tango community invites you to start your tango journey with us and, like thousands of others, find fulfillment, joy, and self-discovery through its music, movement and embrace.
Tango Core 1 See Calendar for current series title.
The overall objectives of Tango Core 1 is to a) introduce fundamental elements, technique and basic figures to get you dancing at the milongas or practicas and b) get you prepared for Tango Core 2.
Each series will feature movements and elements that will help build foundational and improvisational skills. Leaders will learn to compose their own dance using basic tango movements with musical variations. Followers will hone their sensitivity and learn techniques to respond to the nuances of each movement and each leader. Within the Tango Core 1 series, you will also be familiarized with the different musical styles played at milongas and be given the confidence to dance to each style. You may begin with any of the series. Once you have completed at least 10 weeks of Core Tango 1 classes, you can begin taking Tango Core 2. Although we highly recommend attending most or all classes in a series, we're now able to accommodate newbies during any week of the series IF they attend the Pre-Class Prep offered 15 minutes before each Tango Core 1 class.
